Walter Oesterheld was one of the German painters who visited Paris around 1900, a city that at the time had a great attraction for young artists. The prevailing style there was Impressionism, a movement that placed the portrayal of light and colour above the exact representation of reality. The impressions the artists gained in Paris after their return to their own country determined the rest of their painting career. They mainly focused on painting lively cityscapes and the fashionable nightlife with elegantly dressed women in theatres, on terraces and in restaurants.
