Willem Bastiaan Tholen was a pupil of Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel. His early landscapes, painted around Giethoorn and Kampen, bear the clear stamp of his teacher. Later he painted mostly portraits and woodland, town and coastal scenes in a painterly style and bright palette. After 1895 Tholen would take his sailboat, the Eudia, on meandering trips over the old Zuiderzee and the rivers and waterways of Zealand and Holland, painting countless views of ports and the water.
