The painter Willem Dooijewaard was an avid traveler. Between 1913 and 1932 he traveled with short breaks through Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia and Tibet. With a broad, gentle brushstroke he captured the life and color of these exotic countries. Figures occupy an important place in his oeuvre, while he occasionally painted landscapes, cityscapes and a single still life of flowers. After 1932 he settled in Laren. In 1938 he spent some time in Nice, where he completed special ballet studies.
