Romantic painters such as Van Deventer were especially attracted by the picturesqueness of the ships on the beach of Katwijk and the unequal struggle of the fishermen against the sea. The tragedy of a shipwreck was also a popular theme. In 1844 this was depicted in a very narrative way in this painting by Willem van Deventer, who was often to be found in Katwijk in the first half of the 19th century.
