William Henry Singer

The First Snow, Holland
oil on board 50.5 x 40.0 cm, signed l.r. and dated on the reverse 1933

This painting was previously for sale.

William Singer, the son of an American steel magnate, was financially independent and chose to become a painter. It was mainly the Hague School painters who inspired him to do so. In 1901 he left for Europe, first to Paris and then settled in Laren in the spring of 1901. After a visit to Norway in 1904, he painted almost exclusively Norwegian landscapes in a clear palette and short, juxtaposed brushstrokes.
