For a long time, riding a donkey was a popular attraction for children on the beach of Scheveningen and Zandvoort. Donkey owners were there ready to sell a ride on the back of a small donkey to young beach visitors for a few cents. Shutter paints such a ride in 1948, but we know that at the beginning of the 20th century this attraction was already in vogue because of the work Isaac Israels also made on this subject around 1900. Riding a donkey was one of the many attractions that developed when people discovered that fresh sea air was beneficial for people's physical and mental health and more and more people sought their entertainment along the beaches of the Dutch coast.
