Wobbe Alkema was a painter, printmaker, draughtsman, architect and designer was a member of two Groningen painting groups, De Ploeg (1924-1925, 1951) and Het Narrenschip (1951-1957). Alkema’s early work was at first geometric abstraction, influenced by work by Belgian contemporaries and Constructivist artists like Wassily Kandinsky, El Lissitsky and Paul Klee. After 1945 his work reveals a greater use of diverse forms and a certain affinity with reality, as his compositions invoke references to people and their environment.
