Gabriel is characterized as the pre-eminent portraitist of the Dutch polder. He learned to paint in nature in Oosterbeek, where he spent some time together with J.W. Bilders and J.H.L. de Haas. He lived in Brussels between 1860 and 1884. From there he returned regularly to paint the Dutch lakes and polders. Until the eighties, this was mainly the area around Kortenhoef, Abcoude and Vreeland. After he went to live in Scheveningen in 1884, he worked a lot in the vicinity of The Hague. Eventually Gabriel developed into one of the leading painters of the Hague School. Almost all major museums have his work.
