Alfred Johnson lived in Putney, a part of London historically known for its rowing events. Johnson often found inspiration for his paintings close to home, as this scene shows. He painted his subjects in an impressionistic style and with predominantly subdued colours. Not much is known about Johnson's life. He exhibited at least in the years 1881-1887, including at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and of the Royal Institute of Oil painters.
