Anton Rudolf Mauve, better known as Mauve Jr., was born in 1876 in The Hague as the son of the well-known Hague School painter Anton Mauve. After his studies at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam (1894-1897) the painter lived and worked in Laren, Avereest, Bussum, Blaricum and Veere. He mainly painted landscapes, cityscapes, figures and marines in impressionist style. Characteristic of his work is a grayish palette. Only rarely did he use bright colors.
