The Belgium-born painter Bernard Pothast first lived and worked in Amsterdam and then settled in Laren in 1911. There he joined the Laren School, to which painters like Hendrik Kever and Albert Neuhuys had once belonged. He painted the lives of the simple peasant folk in and around the farms and on the land. In particular his interiors of peasant women and children emanate an engaging serenity.
