Charles Paul Gruppe was one of the American painters who came to our country between 1883 and 1914 to paint the fishing life of Katwijk and the surrounding area. Gruppe arrived in 1889, settled in The Hague, took lessons at the academy and learned to speak Dutch so fluently that he was completely absorbed by the Hague painters group. In particular after 1894, Katwijk became his field of work, bringing the advises of his teacher H.W Mesdag into practice. The departure of the fishing fleet, the fish auction on the beach and the women waiting on the beach were popular topics. Gruppe sold most of his paintings in America, where they are still part of large private collections.
