Cornelis Vreedenburgh was largely self-taught. Initially he worked as a house painter and drew and painted in his spare time, until in 1904 he was able to devote himself entirely to painting thanks to a royal grant. Valuable to him was the advice of the impressionist W.B. Tholen, who often took him on his boat to the Kagerplassen and Loosdrechtse Plassen. The meadow and water scenes that Vreedenburgh painted were immediately popular because of their strong colours and the striking way in which he depicted the light and atmosphere of the landscape. In 1917 the painter settled in Laren. From that time on, many Amsterdam cityscapes were created.
