The artist D. Pols specialized in painting cityscapes and worked around the middle of the 19th century. The historicizing Dutch cityscape was very popular in the 19th century, both at home and abroad. Cornelis Springer and his student Adrianus Eversen clearly set the tone within this genre. Interest in the painted 'cityscape of yesteryear' was fueled by a strong nationalism at the time, with a focus on the Golden Age. This longing for the past also had an impact on painting. A romanticized, 'typically Dutch' atmosphere was created, in which history paintings, interior scenes, landscapes and city tables were regarded as painted odes to our own country.
