Dirk Breed has become known for his very own style, which is expressionistic but at the same time also shows features of Dutch naive painting. He is strongest in his landscapes, and especially in his North Holland polder landscapes. In clean lines he emphasized the geometry and the overwhelming openness of this landscape. 'The vastness and the space attract me', the painter who grew up in Noord-Holland said. 'I can't miss that.' Characteristic is also his predominant use of blues and bright greens. Breed lived most of his life in Amsterdam, where he was a member of St. Lucas and De Brug.
