Eduard Becht was a pupil of the successful Hague painter Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen, for whom mood and atmosphere played an important role in the landscape. At Becht, this is no less important. By placing the horizon very high in this painting of the Haagse Bos, there is more emphasis on the reflection in the water than on the trees on the bank. For a long time, Becht was associated as an art critic for De Avondpost, for which he covered exhibitions by contemporaries.
