Eduard Karsen was the son of the romantic painter Kasparus Karsen. After his education at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, he maintained close contacts with the Eighties. The mysterious, poetic character of his paintings was in keeping with the work of this group of poets and writers. Karsen painted simple town and village views, and farms placed in the 'silent twilight' of the morning or evening. Human presence is kept to a minimum in his paintings. Museums: including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller in Otterlo.
