Frieda Hunziker was considered a remarkable and progressive artist in the 1950s and 1960s. Initially, she was a drawing teacher until she started painting freely herself in the 1930s. Her early work is characterized by a simplified, realistic style. In 1948 she came to complete abstraction. The year before, Hunziker was one of the founders of Vrij Beelden. This group of artists regularly exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and took place alongside the Experimentals and Cobra in the pursuit to non-figuration. Hunziker was the only woman in the group and also one of the most active members.
