George Grosz is one of the most important German Expressionists. His talent was expressed in many areas. He drew, painted, wrote, designed costumes and was one of the pioneers of the Dada movement in Germany. Most famous are the drawings and paintings he made between 1914 and 1933. In them he portrayed a decadent post-war Berlin, populated by prostitutes, invalids and disfigured, overfed capitalists. The distortion of the figures in this work had a strongly socially critical function. Grosz was a committed communist and he denounced the prevailing bourgeois morality. He also made a number of beautiful nude portraits, including of his wife Eva Louise Peter, after they emigrated to America with their children in 1933. Around 1920, Grosz temporarily stopped signing his work on paper, using a stamp instead.
