Gerard Delfgaauw grew up in the watery Westland. It is therefore not surprising that the polder landscape of his native region is an important subject in his oeuvre. He painted many village and city views in summer and winter, which were in great demand in his time. He also became known for his dynamic representations of the activity in the Rotterdam ports. Delfgaauw worked in an impressionistic-naturalistic style. The way in which he managed to 'capture' the sunlight and its reflections in the water on the canvas is particularly appreciated. He mainly formed himself after initially training at the then drawing academy in The Hague.
