Gerbrand Frederik van Schagen was a Dutch landscape painter par excellence, working not only near his homes in The Hague and Laren, but criss-crossing the country to Amsterdam, the Gooi region and Loosdrecht, the quiet villages of Friesland and the undulating landscape of southern Limburg. His aim was to record the essential character and mood of a place as it appeared at a specific moment in the day.
