Born in Rotterdam, Gerrit David Labots attended the art academy and lived and worked in the port city his entire life. He painted landscapes and portraits, but favoured still lifes and flowers rendered in a bright, rich palette. Labots regarded himself as a professional, not disposed to experimentation but faithful to the naturalist-realist style of his academy days.
