Like other early 19th century artists, Gerrit Hendrik Göbell started out as a carriage painter. The artistic basis for this was the lessons of his father, who was a decorative painter, and his education at the drawing academy in Deventer. He is also said to have attended the drawing academy in Amsterdam. Göbell spent a lot of time making sketches, which he then developed into drawings, watercoluors and paintings in his studio. His romantic summer and winter scenes were known, for which he found inspiration in the barely cultivated and undeveloped landscape of Salland. He also painted figures, still lifes and cityscapes.
