Henri Charrier received his first painting lessons from his father, the sculptor Edouard Charrier. Already at the age of 18 he settled in a large studio near the Parc Montsouris in Paris and signed up for painting lessons with Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). In his early work he imitates this master, both in his use of colour and in his subjects: posed, large history pieces that he submits to the annual Paris Salon. From 1891 he starts painting directly from nature and forms with a number of friends a painting group that would later be called the Crozant School. Charrier has painted several French churches with monumental murals.
