The Belgian Henri van Seben painted mainly lively genre scenes and landscapes that stand out through an extremely precise way of painting. From an early age he came to The Hague as an orphan, where he was taught by Huib van Hove and followed a training course at the Hague Academy (1839-1849). This led him to paint atmospheric Dutch ice views throughout his life, even after he returned to Belgium around 1850 and settled in Elsene. Van Seben was also a skilled watercolorist and founder of the Société Belge des Aquarellistes.
