Herbert Fiedler is one of the leading German expressionists of the early twentieth century, and is mentioned in the same breath as painters such as Kirchner, Beckmann and Grosz. He visited the academy in Dresden, where the expressionist artist group Die Brücke brought up-to-date painting upside down. Then the painter lived alternately in Berlin and Paris. In 1935 he fled to Holland and settled in Laren. Fiedler was a pure artist with a very personal view of reality. He made sketches and scribbles anytime, anywhere, and his oeuvre also covers a wide range of subjects. Particularly in his use of color is still the influence of the French impressionists and Fauvists to be seen.
