The Hague painter Hessel de Boer mainly painted portraits after 1954, in addition to still lifes, cityscapes and interiors. This painting of Queen Beatrix is a preliminary study for another portrait of the queen. Hessel de Boer made portraits of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus on behalf of the Hague society 'De Witte'. These paintings were unveiled in September 1981.
