The German painter and sculptor Horst Antes became world famous with his Kopffüssler (koppoters), figures that largely consist of a disproportionately large head, arms and legs. Antes painted these grotesque figures for the first time in 1960. In the years that followed, he would elaborate on this theme in all kinds of techniques and form variants: in paintings, watercolors, graphics and, from 1963, in monumental sculptures. This made Antes one of the first post-war artists to look for new possibilities in figurative painting. As early as 1959, the artist won prestigious prizes and grants. At the age of 19 he became a teacher at the Karlsruhe Academy. In Germany, his work is part of the collections of the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, the Museum Ludwig and the Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
