Jaap Min was born in Bergen, where he came into contact with the world of painters at a young age. Determined to become a painter himself, after primary school he came to study with the house painter Joop Leijen, who recognized his talent and brought him into contact with Matthieu Wiegman. In the early work of the painter we therefore find the influence of the Bergen School. For example, he used earth colors and preferred landscapes and still lifes. After 1938, and again after 1960, his work changed radically. In the latter period, his work connected with the young, more or less abstract Bergen painters.
