The Hague painter Jaap Nanninga was one of the painters who only made the step from figurative to abstract after the Second World War. One of the influences on his development was the abstract work of Geer van Velde, whom he met in 1946 in the south of France. Nanninga built up his compositions from forms that he intuitively placed on the canvas. In 1959 Nanninga was in the South of France for a few weeks. After that we see bright colors in his work: bright red versus bright and dark blue and green in overlapping areas of color.
