Jacobus van Looy, known as the writer of the Jaapje, Jaap en Jakob trilogy, described himself as a 'born painter who also happened to be a writer'. In his paintings and drawings he differed from his contemporaries through his idiosyncratic presentation. After 1901 he decided never to exhibit or sell again. After 1913 he painted 'Calabash Pears' in the garden of his house in Haarlem. It is part of a small series of flowers and fruits that the artist has hung all over the house.
