J.A. Bakker was trained as a drawing teacher and graphic artist in Amsterdam. A job as a drawing teacher took him to Noordwolde in Weststellingwerf in 1919, where he lived for the rest of his life. He found inspiration for his paintings in the nature of the south of Friesland, which he visibly enjoyed putting on canvas in robust, expressionist brushstrokes. In addition to being a painter, he was also a monumental and glass artist, a reed weaver and a furniture maker in Noordwolde. A reed weaving industry had emerged there at the end of the 19th century, where, among others, the well-known designer Dirk van Sliedregt designed rattan furniture for factories such as Rohé and where Bakker taught at the Rijksrietvlechtschool.
