J.A. Bakker was trained in Amsterdam as a drawing teacher and graphic artist. A job as an art teacher took him in 1919 to Noordwolde and then to West-Stellingerwerf, where he lived for the rest of his life. For his paintings he found inspiration in the nature of the south of Friesland, which he painted with visible pleasure in robust, expressionist brushstrokes.
