After his studies at the academies in Den Bosch and Antwerp, Jan Bogaerts initially painted dreamy figure pieces and fairytale parks and gardens in the atmosphere of symbolism. Here we recognize the influence of his Bosch teacher Antoon van Welie. From 1915 he mainly made still lifes, both of flowers and objects. These are more realistic than the landscapes, but just as moody and serene. For his compositions Bogaerts used both everyday attributes and antique objects, such as carafes, bottles, bowls, painted boxes and jewelery, set against a sober background. His flower still lifes stand out because of their original composition and beautiful colours.
