Although Jan Hendrik Verheijen also painted church interiors and landscapes, he became best known for his cityscapes. Initially he would become a notary, but at the age of 21 he opted for the painting profession and went to study with Utrecht painter Nicolaas Osti. His talent was discovered there by the collector Jan Bleuland, who had Verheijen copy the cityscapes of the 17th century Jan van der Heyden and Gerrit Berckheyde. The influence of these masters is reflected in the extremely accurate way in which Verheijen worked out his cityscapes. He painted both topographical and (partly) fantasized urban images.
