Jan Nolte was born in Tilburg and lived and worked in Amsterdam from 1933 to 1996, where he painted many cityscapes. He also made several study trips to Spain and France. Self-taught, Nolte made a name for himself above all with his naturalistic landscapes, Breton harbors and cityscapes. He was a member of 'De Onafhankelijken' in Amsterdam.
