The Frisian painter Jan Planting lived in Drachten all his life. He mainly drew and painted the landscape around his hometown and cityscapes of Drachten and other Frisian villages. Planting was a natural talent. He started as a servant to a house painter and also took drawing lessons. When he starts his own painting company, he develops further as a free painter. He studies the work of other artists, paints and draws and receives advice from Ids Wiersma, who lived in Drachten from 1918 to 1926. Afterwards he also met the shoemaker and artist Thijs Rinsema, with whom he spoke about his work. Hundreds of drawings by the artist form the most important part of the topographical and cultural-historical atlas of the municipality of Smallingerland.
