Johan Briedé was trained as a craftsman, among others by Chris Lebeau and Willem van Konijnenburg. His artistic career started with designing book bindings and covers and making illustrations. In addition, he made free work. He often got inspiration from nature, during many travels. Briedé painted, watercoloured, drew (pen, pastel), and lithographed landscapes, ships, animals and flowers.
