Johannes Bosboom was born in The Hague in 1817 and became apprenticed to the cityscape painter Bart van Hove. He early chose to specialise in church interiors, encouraged in this by the praise he received from his contemporaries. His watercolours and paintings depict hushed church interiors, populated by figures in 17th century dress. As a Hague School artist, he sought to convey the impressions such buildings made on him. At the same time he drew inspiration from the light and atmosphere in the works of the 17th century painters Rembrandt and Emanuel de Witte.
