The Flemish painter John Michaux was one of the artists who continued the impressionism of their Antwerp teacher Frans Hens well into the 20th century. Around 1927 he made a name for himself with river views and landscapes around the Scheldt estuary in subtle colour nuances. After that he also devoted himself to still lifes and figure paintings. The influence of Cubism is revealed in the powerful form structure of his ships and figures.
