Provenance: coll. Allan C. Black, Toronto, Canada.

Jules René Hervé, chronicler of bustling Parisian city life, continued in his paintings a tradition that began in the 19th century with painters such as Georges Stein, René Léverd and M.F. Firmin-Girard. The densely populated squares of the French capital, the flower markets and the many parks were a grateful subject, which he depicted in a loose, impressionist style. He also painted landscapes, narrative village scenes and genre pieces.
