The Haarlem painter Leo de Winter was self-taught. He drew and painted cityscapes, portraits, still lifes and landscapes in naturalistic and impressionistic style. He found inspiration in particular in the surroundings of his hometown of Haarlem: scenes in warm colours of the sea, the Spaarne and Amsterdam's western harbour area. De Winter was a versatile artist; in the fifty years of his artistry he has been involved in many disciplines such as graphics, watercolours, drawing and painting. In 1938 he co-founded 'Kunstkring De Acht', which still meets in the Haarlemse Waag. He was also a loyal visitor to the Haarlem Artists' Association 'Kunst Zij Ons Doel', of which he was a board member and later an honorary member.
