The impressionist Louis Stutterheim liked to paint in the open air and is considered part of the afterblossom of the Hague School. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and the drawing academy in The Hague. After his studies, the painter moved in 1904 to the village of Kortenhoef, located in a rich fen and lake area. Many painters gathered there who never tire of seeing the lakes, the fields, the mills and especially the skies. Later he traveled to Java and Philadelphia and was in Utrecht and Amsterdam to work there. From 1924 he painted in the surroundings of 's-Graveland and Wijdemeren, where he also settled for a while. Over the years, his palette becomes lighter and sunnier. Stutterheim was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.
