Vertin mainly lived and worked in The Hague. He painted cityscapes and streets in summer and winter. Sometimes his work is topographical, but mostly he painted fantasy views. Especially in his streets in winter he paid a lot of attention to the reflection of the light on the snow-covered roofs, window frames and sidewalks. C. Rochussen and S.L. Verveer painted the staffage on some of his cityscapes.
