Philip Sadée

Bringing in the catch, Scheveningen
oil on canvas 80.8 x 130.3 cm, signed l.r.

This painting was previously for sale.

Provenance: R.H. Hall Esq., Eastbourne, Groot-Brittannië, aug. 1962; part. coll. Groot-Brittannië.

Initially, the Hague painter Philip Sadeé made history pieces. From 1865 he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, center of the Düsseldorfer Mahlerschule, famous for his genre painting. That is where Sadée started painting genre pieces. After his return to the Netherlands in 1888, he focused on the fishing genre. To this end he stayed a lot in Scheveningen, especially in the autumn with his low sun, gray skies and mist. Like Josef Israëls, he often portrayed the heavy life of fishermen's wives
