This romantic winter landscape with skaters was painted around 1855 by Pieter Kluyver. This Amsterdam artist specialized in landscapes, in winter or summer, usually furnished with a single walker, wood gatherer or hunter. If he really wanted to show off, Kluyver asked fellow artists to furnish his work. For example, it is known that he collaborated with Cornelis Springer. In this ice scene the skating people were painted by Salomon Verveer, as his initials show at the bottom left. Although Verveer lived in The Hague and Kluyver in Amsterdam, both painters must have known each other through the Amsterdam art circuit and possibly through Arti.
