Before 1914, the Belgian painter Prosper de Troyer was mainly influenced by Rik Wouters, whom he met during evening classes at the Academy of Mechelen, and Fauvism from Brabant. During the First World War he joined Antwerp modernism. Through futurism he knows a short period of almost complete abstraction (1920-1922). He then returns to figuration, with powerfully constructed paintings in a highly simplified, expressive form language. Themes from his family life, mother and child, man and the landscape predominate. From 1939 De Troyer was a teacher at the Mechelen Academy of Visual Arts.
