The painter and graphic artist Rob Brandes, who was originally from The Hague, studied art in Amsterdam. He was also taught by the graphic artist Ap Sok, the illustrator and political draftsman Lex Metz, and the painter and sculptor Johan van Zweden. Brandes pledged his heart to the capital, moved into his studio here and painted many views for which Amsterdam was a source of inspiration. Later work is on the border between figuration and abstraction, with 'movement' as the predominant characteristic. Fast, light, intuitive and suggestive are equally typical for work from this period, which sometimes has recognizable elements, but which mainly stems from the imagination. Brandes is a member of the Amersfoort artists' society De Ploegh. His work is included in national and municipal collections.
