The painting talent of Mols was noticed at a young age. He was born in 1848 and studied at the Academy of Antwerp. At the age of 15 he was allowed to exhibit his paintings. In his younger years he traveled to France where he was taught by Jules Dupré. In 1868 he left for Barbizon to paint landscapes. He was in close contact with J.F Millet and A. Vollon. Mols initially painted heavy and gloomy landscapes, but around 1872 clarified his palette. This painting, 'Frankfurt am Main with the' Eiserner Steg 'bridge, seen from Sachsenhausen', is most probably made after 1870. From that time Mols painted many sea and harbor views in a realistic and refined style.
