Roeland Koning

A view of Egmond aan Zee
pencil and watercolour on paper 20.0 x 28.0 cm, signed l.r. and painted ca. 1924-1934

This work on paper was previously for sale.

Provenance: Koninklijke Verzamelingen; nalatenschap H.K.H. Prinses Juliana (1909-2004), Koningin der Nederlanden van 1948 tot 1980.

The painter Roeland Koning, born in Amsterdam, received a solid artistic education. In succession he visited the Quellinusschool, the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijs and the Amsterdam Rijksacademie led by Nicolaas van der Waay. Influence of the latter painter is reflected in the naturalistic style of Koning, who experimented also with realism, cubism and futurism from time to time. For him, however, the craft of painting was vital. Flower still lifes, figures, cityscapes and 'industry' were preferred. In addition, he painted the sea side, especially the tough fishing people of Egmond where he settled in 1924. After 1927, in The Hague, his style became more impressionistic with a free brushstroke.
